Easy and simple way to learn the use of prepositions- Prepositions can be tricky, but I will explain them in a simple and easy way with rules and examples.
What is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence.
🔹 Example:
- The book is on the table.
- She is in the room.
Here, on and in are prepositions because they tell us the position of the book and the girl.
Types of Prepositions & Easy Rules
1️⃣ Prepositions of Place (Where?)
These show position or location.
✅ Common prepositions:
in, on, at, under, over, between, behind, next to
✅ Rules & Examples:
- IN → inside something
- 📌 She is in the room.
- 📌 The keys are in my bag.
- ON → on the surface
- 📌 The phone is on the table.
- 📌 There is a painting on the wall.
- AT → specific point/place
- 📌 She is at the door.
- 📌 I am at the bus stop.
2️⃣ Prepositions of Time (When?)
These show time or when something happens.
✅ Common prepositions:
in, on, at, before, after, since, during, until
✅ Rules & Examples:
- IN → longer periods (months, years, centuries)
- 📌 I was born in 2000.
- 📌 We go on vacation in July.
- ON → specific days and dates
- 📌 My birthday is on Monday.
- 📌 We met on April 5th.
- AT → exact time
- 📌 The train arrives at 6 PM.
- 📌 The class starts at 9:30 AM.
3️⃣ Prepositions of Direction (Where to?)
These show movement from one place to another.
✅ Common prepositions:
to, into, onto, out of, from, towards

- TO → moving toward a place

- 📌 She walked to the park.
- INTO → entering inside
- 📌 She went into the room.
- 📌 The dog jumped into the car.

4️⃣ Prepositions of Manner (How?)
These show how something happens.

by, with, like, as

- BY → method of doing something
